Wines of the Southern Rhone

The Southern Rhone wine area is dotted with numerous beautiful wine villages; perhaps the most famous are 1362-federation-des-producteurs-de-chateauneuf-du-pape[1]Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Sablet, Gigondas, Seguret and Beaumes-de-Venise, just to name a few. The Côtes du Rhone appellation offers many delicious wines at accessible prices, and with over 100,000 acres in production, there are more than enough wine domaines to visit in several days of touring.

The picturesque village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous of all the cru wine villages in the Southern Rhone region.  It is well known for its jammy, rich, red grape varietal blend, which can be composed of 13 different grape varieties, mainly Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre.  This delicious, full bodied wine can be cellared for 10 – 15 years.  The village itself has a very interesting history, originating back to the early 14th Century when the Papal seat was based in Avignon.  Chateauneuf-du-Pape literally translates – Pope’s new castle, as this was the location of one of the Pope’s summer homes.  This now ruined chateau is perched at the top of the historic medieval village. It is the Popes in fact who did much to promote wine making in this region.  Chateauneuf-du-Pape is well known for its vinyards which are planted in heavy river stone covered fields.  Learn how the unique terroir in this area plays a role in producing one of the best wines in France.1364-federation-des-producteurs-de-chateauneuf-du-pape[1]
